Poor diet costs the NHS £6bn a year
Researchers have calculated that poor dietary habits are costing the NHS some £6bn a year - three times the financial burden of smoking. Using World Health Organisation data the authors applied a composite term to describe the impact of ill-health and death, described as DALYS, or Disability Adjusted Life Years. They estimated that 37 percent of DALYS could be attributed to food-related diseases. The researchers also calculate that poor diet accounts for 10% of all DALYS, costing an annual £6billion.
