Sunlight may decrease your risk of prostate cancer
Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D. However, mainstream medicine recommends that you cover up when outside in the sun for fear of skin cancer. While we agree you should take all precautions to prevent overexposure to the sun, and avoid being in the sun during the hours when the sun is strongest, covering up all the time decreases your vitamin D intake. And this could be dangerous for men as researchers now believe vitamin D can help prevent prostate cancer.
US researchers from the Northern California Cancer Center, Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, and the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University, found that men with high sun exposure had half the risk of prostate cancer than men with low sun exposure.
Lead researcher, Esther John, Ph.D, states, 'We believe that sunlight helps to reduce the risk of prostate cancer because the body manufactures the active form of vitamin D from exposure to sunlight.'
If you don't want to risk too much exposure to the sun, or if like now, winter's limited sunlight is keeping you from getting your vitamin D, you may want to try supplementing with vitamin D or increasing your dietary intake.
Good sources of vitamin D include:
- cod liver oil
- sardines
- herring
- salmon
- tuna
- milk
- cheese
- eggs
